Leadership isn’t about power—it’s about service. Servant leadership challenges the traditional power dynamic by putting the needs of others first. When leaders prioritize their teams, they build trust, foster collaboration, and drive sustainable success.
What is Servant Leadership?
Coined by Robert Greenleaf in 1970, servant leadership emphasizes a leader’s role as a servant to their employees, customers, and the community. The goal? To empower others, ensuring both individuals and organizations thrive.
As Operations Officer, my Captain once told me that I worked for my people and not vice versa. I asked what he meant. He explained that it’s my job to make sure they have everything they need to get the job done!
Key Traits of a Servant Leader
🔹 Empathy – A great servant leader connects with the emotions and experiences of their team.
💡 Example: Instead of reprimanding an underperforming employee, a leader listens, understands their challenges, and provides support.
🔹 Stewardship – Responsible leadership means managing resources wisely while investing in people.
💡 Example: A company reinvests a portion of its profits into employee training. It also funds community projects. This approach ensures both individual and organizational growth.
🔹 Community Building – Servant leaders foster a culture of belonging and teamwork.
💡 Example: A leader encourages cross-functional collaboration and ensures every team member’s voice is heard.
