The Current AI Leadership Dilemma

In the age of artificial intelligence (AI), data science I might add, the conversation has often been dominated by debates around ethics, constraints, and whether AI is a force for good or ill. While these discussions are essential, they can overshadow a critical need for organizations: developing a strategic vision that leverages AI to achieve corporate with global objectives, such as those outlined by corporate sustainability and the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The focus on AI’s potential pitfalls has left many organizations in a state of inaction about the promise of AI, lacking a clear vision for how AI can drive their success and contribute to broader societal needs.

The Strategic Vision Gap in AI

The hesitation to fully embrace AI within organizational strategy may stem partly from fear of the unknown and partly from, sorry to say, a lack of vision. Many companies are spending too much time debating AI’s ethics and not enough time understanding how it can be a tool for achieving their strategic goals. Many of their people and employees may get it! This gap in vision is problematic, especially when considering the global economy and pressing issues like the UN SDGs. AI, when aligned with a clear strategic vision and objectives, can be a powerful force for innovation and growth, yet too many leaders are failing to see its potential. Let’s not forget a prime directive, revenue!

Key Points:

  • AI discussions often focus on limitations rather than opportunities. If you think you can’t, you’re probably right!
  • The lack of strategic vision in AI use is a barrier to progress. Think about your vision, enhance it with AI, and drive the achievement of that vision with data-driven decision making.
  • Organizations need to shift focus from debates to actionable AI strategies. Perhaps a team of innovators, I call the “League of Innovators” means you’re serious about getting on with it!

The Fear of AI in High-Level Goal Setting

There is a growing concern that if AI models were developed to predict and detect malintent, it could expose inefficiencies and underperformance within companies that prefer to operate under the radar; keep doing what they’ve always been doing. The fear is that AI could reveal uncomfortable truths or even leaks about corporate practices that prioritize short-term gains over long-term sustainability. This reluctance to embrace AI’s potential in achieving high-level global goals may stem from the fear that doing so could upend the status quo, particularly for those with vested interests in maintaining less-than-optimal operations.

Key Points:

  • AI’s potential to expose inefficiencies creates fear among some corporate leaders.
  • The concern about leaks of corporate data is cause for the banning of AI, possibly to their detriment. How about considering protocols, standards, and policies to mitigate such leaks?
  • Ethical AI models could help align corporate actions with global sustainability goals and increase profits at the same time. Here’s how AI can help, instead of saying can’t, think about figuring out how.
  • Overcoming this fear is crucial for realizing AI’s full potential in strategic leadership and achieving the corporate strategic vision.

AI as a Tool for Organizational Growth and Diversity

In my forthcoming book, still writing, I explore how a multinational, diverse (though imperfect) company of over 32,000 employees can achieve up to a 35% increase in revenues (the goal) through strategic use of AI. By creating AI models from large Python generated tables in collaboration with AI that help simulate (predict, more like speculate) the impact of cultural diversity on company performance, leaders can better understand how diversity initiatives contribute to organizational effectiveness, efficiency, and growth. This approach not only enhances data-driven decision-making to support the business case for diversity (e.g., increased markets and revenues), moving beyond “fluff” initiatives (weak data-sets or no data-sets at all) that lack substance. We must transform and capture the promise of generative AI in work processes, structure, and our approach to talent.

Key Points:

  • AI can simulate the impact of diversity on organizational performance, new markets, and revenues generation.
  • Data-driven insights can support the business case for diversity beyond what’s right or ethics but game changing growth and revenue generation.
  • AI leadership (corporate leadership) must prioritize real, impactful initiatives over superficial ones or fear of losing one’s job. If you’re doing what you’re supposed to be doing, it’ll all work out!

The Role of AI in Validating Organizational Initiatives

One of AI’s most powerful applications lies in its ability to assess the viability of organizational initiatives. AI models can predict the likelihood of success for various programs, distinguishing between those that are truly beneficial and those that are merely “fluff.” By providing the C-Suite with data-backed insights, AI can help leaders make informed decisions that align with their strategic vision, ensuring that resources are allocated to initiatives with the greatest potential for impact.

Key Points:

  • AI can help validate the effectiveness of organizational initiatives. People, leaders, drive strategi vision and AI can help them enhance that visions and create options as strategic objectives.
  • Data-driven models help leaders prioritize impactful programs and the data modeling to support the vision.
  • AI provides the C-Suite with critical data-driven insights for strategic decision-making that has to potential for evidenced based impact, cost-benefit, and return on investment.

A Call to Action for Data Scientists and AI Leaders

It’s time for data scientists, AI leaders, and those with a deep understanding of organizational development to step into the forefront of this transformation. Although the “League of Innovators” is not a reality today, the concept is a real one, teams of data scientists, subject matter experts, executive, and AI (generative?) working to achieve the strategic vision of the organization and global community. Waiting for traditional corporate guidance to embrace AI in achieving strategic visions is no longer viable. The reality is that many organizations are hesitant, caught up in debates, or simply unaware of AI’s full potential. If you wait too long, you may be the late mover, This is where a new kind of leadership must emerge—a “League of Innovators” that combines the expertise of data science, AI, business leadership, deep learning, and more.

The Role of the “League of Innovators”:

  • Breaking New Ground: Data scientists and AI professionals, particularly those with certifications like SHRM, CPTD, and Data Scientists ( includes the family of AI, machine learning, and deep learning models) have the unique ability to bridge the gap between AI technology and strategic business goals. You are not just technologists; you must be leaders who understand how to apply AI to real-world problems, driving both innovation, efficiency, and effectiveness for a higher purpose; that which may be in front of you!.
  • Leading Without Permission: Don’t wait for the corporate hierarchy to give the green light. Start developing and advocating for AI-driven solutions in your own communities that can help align with global goals, ethical standards, and organizational vision. Your insights and proactive leadership can guide organizations (if not your own) toward more effective, data-driven strategies.
  • Collaborating for Impact: The “League of Innovators” represents a collective idea of forward-thinking professionals who understand that the intersection of AI, leadership, and organizational development is where real change happens. By working together, sharing knowledge (difficult, privacy and confidentiality are issues), and pushing the boundaries of what AI can achieve, this league can help set new standards for how businesses operate and grow in the AI era.

Again, the bottom line is clear: waiting for traditional leadership to provide guidance on AI’s role in strategic vision seems to be a losing game. Those in the AI and data science communities must step up to lead the way, helping organizations understand and harness AI’s potential for driving growth, innovation, and sustainability. There are those who having strong negative feelings about AI, very strong for that matter! By focusing on the future and aligning AI with global needs and organizational goals, we can create a new paradigm of leadership, giving the feeling of safety, that is proactive, data-driven, and aligned with the broader objectives of humanity.

Call to Action: Data scientists and AI professionals, the time to act is now. Join this emerging “League of Innovators” and lead the charge in integrating AI into strategic vision. Let’s get together and create this new language, a charter so to speak. Your skills and knowledge are not just valuable—they are essential for shaping the future of organizations and, by extension, the global economy. Don’t let anybody tell you different, that’s the game. Step up, collaborate, and show the world what AI leadership truly looks like.

Final Thoughts:

  • AI leadership must move beyond fear and debate to drive action.
  • Strategic vision and AI alignment are key to future success.
  • The time to act is now, with AI playing a central role in shaping the future of organizations and the global economy.
